Burglar’s High-Speed Getaway Ends in Arrest
In the early hours of 12 August 2021, 21-year-old Tommie Lloyd pulled off a daring burglary in Dagenham – only to crash the stolen car moments later and spark a police chase that ended in his capture.
Break-In Turns Sour
- Lloyd, wearing gloves and a balaclava, forced open a house door on Dene Holm Road using a screwdriver.
- He stole the keys to an Audi A5 parked outside and jumped into the car.
- While reversing, Lloyd crashed into a wall, waking the homeowner who immediately called the police.
Police Helicopter Tracks Reckless Driver
- The police helicopter spotted Lloyd speeding across the Dartford Crossing into Essex.
- He drove dangerously, overtaking and undertaking at high speed, risking the lives of other road users.
- The Audi was later parked near Goodmayes railway station in Ilford.
Caught After Foot Chase
- Lloyd fled on foot but was quickly caught by a dog handler after a brief pursuit.
- Officers recovered discarded gloves, balaclava, and the screwdriver he used in the burglary.
- He was charged with burglary, aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, and multiple driving offences.
Justice Served at Maidstone Crown Court
At Maidstone Crown Court, Lloyd pleaded guilty and was sentenced on 22 February to two years and four months behind bars. He was also banned from driving for four years and two months.
“Burglary is a very invasive crime and can have a considerable impact on victims,” said Detective Constable Colin Cherry of the Chief Constable’s Crime Squad. “Lloyd broke into a house while the occupants were asleep, damaged the victim’s car, and put other road users at risk with his dangerous driving. His prison sentence is thoroughly deserved.”
