Holiday Cash Thief Busted After Clacton Break-In
A holiday was ruined when a burglar broke into a Clacton home and made off with cash and valuables – but CCTV and keen-eyed locals helped nail the crook.
Caught on Camera: Clumsy Burglar Liam Dixon
On September 7, the victim returned to his Orwell Road flat to find £600 in holiday savings, £100 in loose change, video games, and tools stolen. Luckily, CCTV caught the entire clumsy caper on film.
The footage showed 28-year-old Liam Dixon trying to climb a drainpipe – which promptly broke under him. Not giving up, Dixon returned with a ladder, forced open a window, and sneaked inside. He then escaped carrying a yellow bag stuffed with stolen goods.
Community Quick to Act – Burglar Nabbed
Essex Police released images of the suspect on social media. Thanks to a flood of tips from Clacton residents, Dixon was swiftly arrested and charged.
Justice Served at Chelmsford Crown Court
At Chelmsford Crown Court on December 2, Dixon pleaded guilty to burglary and was jailed for 28 months.
“This is a classic case of the public supporting to help catch a bad guy,” said Detective Constable Richard English. “Dixon had no thought for anyone but himself, stealing holiday money from an honest, hard-working victim.”
“He wasn’t very bright – his thieving was all caught on camera, and locals quickly spotted him. Let’s hope he uses his time behind bars to rethink his choices.”
“Huge thanks to the public who helped identify Dixon and get him off the streets.”
Police urge everyone to stay vigilant and take extra steps to protect their homes, especially as local shops, pubs, and restaurants buzz back to life.
