Facial Recognition Snags Sex Attacker Within 48 Hours

Craig Walters, also known as Craig Watts and Craig Whites, was caught using facial recognition tech on CCTV from a bus he was travelling on. The 39-year-old was arrested just two days after the attack and pleaded guilty last month to false imprisonment with intent to commit a sexual offence.

Victim Followed, Grabbed and Saved by Hero Witness

Detective Constable Dave Simmons, leading the Cardiff CID probe, revealed the chilling details: “At around 10.50pm on Sunday, November 10, 2019, a young woman was followed off a bus in Pontprennau.

As she walked along a grass verge on Pentwyn Road, a complete stranger grabbed her from behind. “She fought back and screamed for help until a bystander stepped in, forcing the suspect to flee. It must have been terrifying.”

Cutting-Edge Tech Snaps Walters Fast

Police pulled extensive CCTV footage from the area, including the Cardiff Bus, revealing the suspect travelling on the same bus as the victim. Retrospective facial recognition instantly matched the image to Craig Walters, already known to police.

“We would have found him eventually, but thanks to this technology, he was in custody within 48 hours,” said DC Simmons. Further CCTV analysis confirmed Walters was the only person nearby at the time.

Cold-Blooded Pervert Gets Life and Lifetime Sex Offender Register

Walters initially denied the crime but caved under the weight of evidence in December 2020. Today, he began a life sentence with a minimum six-year term and must register as a sex offender for life.

“The victim showed incredible bravery and was ready to testify,” said DC Simmons. “We also thank witness Luke Martin, whose quick action stopped this turning worse. Walters is cold and dangerous, showing no remorse. He pleaded guilty only because the proof was overwhelming.”

“This case shows we will use every tech tool to hunt offenders. We hope it encourages other victims to come forward. Help and support are out there for all victims.”
