Knife-Wielding Suspect Causes Chaos in Leicester Alley
In the early hours of 22 September 2023, chaos erupted on Beaumont Leys Lane, Leicester, when a man armed with a large knife began damaging parked cars.
Caller Follows Suspect, Police Race to Scene
The victim, whose vehicle was smashed, bravely tailed the suspect on foot while alerting police. Officers PC Joshua Shardlow and PC Mo Ahmed arrived swiftly, guided by the caller’s tip pointing to a dark, unlit alleyway.
Knife Attack Sparks Intense Standoff
The suspect appeared, raising a hefty knife and shouting, “I am going to kill you!” He charged at officers at speed. Both PCs deployed Tasers—Shardlow’s hit the target; Ahmed’s missed. The suspect fell but sprang up quickly, swinging the knife just inches from the officers.
Violent Clash Ends With Suspect Arrested
When pepper spray failed, the suspect punched PC Ahmed in the face, causing a broken nose and deep cut. PC Shardlow swung his baton, buying time for Ahmed to retreat. The chase spilled onto the street with the suspect continuing his wild attacks. After falling and kicking out, Shardlow and Ahmed finally subdued the attacker using pepper spray and sheer grit. Shardlow tackled and handcuffed the knife-wielding man under intense struggle.
Police Praise Bravery of Officers
Leicestershire Police Federation Acting Chair Andy Spence hailed the officers: “PC Mo Ahmed and Joshua Shardlow bravely confronted a dangerous man with a knife down a dark alley. The offender slashed Mo’s face and knocked Joshua to the floor. Despite injuries, they gave chase and restrained him. The footage is harrowing and shows real courage. Their bravery and professionalism that night was outstanding.”
