Drunk driver caught swerving on A419 with breath alcohol over triple the limit
Late-night smash on A419
Just before midnight on 2 December last year, chaos erupted on the A419 southbound between Cricklade and Swindon. A black Volkswagen Polo was seen wildly swerving across lanes before crashing into another vehicle. Police were promptly called to the scene.
Driver Benjamin Cooper arrested after failing breath test
Benjamin Cooper, 42, from Hackpen Close, Wroughton, was arrested after blowing 113 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath – more than three times the legal limit of 35 micrograms. Further checks revealed he was driving while disqualified.
Sentenced to 28 months ban and fined
Cooper pleaded guilty at Swindon Magistrates Court on 15 June. He was slapped with a 28-month driving ban, fined £550, and ordered to pay court costs. Authorities warned this was another grim reminder of the dangers drunk driving presents.
Wiltshire Police plead for public vigilance
“Time and time again, we are forced to remind motorists how incredibly dangerous driving under the influence is,” said Sergeant Will Ayres of Wiltshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit.
“Our ongoing campaigns highlight that drinking or taking drugs before driving drastically raises the risk of serious or fatal crashes. You could endanger yourself and others.”
“If you suspect someone is drink or drug driving, don’t hesitate to call us. You could save lives,” Ayres urged.
If you know anyone who regularly drinks or takes drugs before driving, call 101 with details including vehicle registration, descriptions, and usual times. Always dial 999 if a crime is in progress and a driver is behind the wheel.
