Tragedy Strikes as Dad and Daughter Die in Distington Fire
Fire Breaks Out in Early Hours
Paul Scott, nicknamed Archie, and his 14-year-old daughter Mia lost their lives in a devastating fire at their home in Distington on May 22. The blaze erupted just after midnight at the Scotts’ Toll Bar Cottages, waking neighbours and plunging the quiet street into chaos.
Desperate Rescue Attempts
While Caroline, Paul’s wife and Mia’s mother, managed to escape the inferno, frantic efforts to save Paul and Mia ended in heartbreak. Paul was seen trying to fashion a rope out of jeans at an upstairs window. Neighbours rushed to help, and two bystanders smashed Mia’s bedroom window with a brick in a daring rescue attempt. Tragically, a backdraught triggered explosions, forcing them to retreat.
Heartbreaking Aftermath
Police officers, including Archie Scott and Martin Rennie, evacuated nearby residents from the terraced houses. Rennie described the scene as the worst he had ever witnessed. Caroline recalled her husband as “a laugh a minute and full of adventure” and described Mia as “their world.”
Cause of Fire Confirmed
The Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service investigation found the blaze started when Paul threw a cigarette into the living room’s open fire, igniting nearby flammable materials. Both Paul and Mia died from smoke inhalation.
Assistant coroner Margaret Taylor praised the brave neighbours and passers-by for their efforts, confirming the deaths were accidental and unintentional.
