Serial Hospital Thief Jailed Again for Preying on Elderly Patients
June Weatherman, 56, has been locked up once more after a nationwide crime spree stealing from vulnerable hospital patients. The career criminal was originally jailed for seven years in 2014 for swiping bank cards from elderly patients and splashing thousands on their accounts.
Back Behind Bars After New Wave of Thefts
After her release, Weatherman wasted no time targeting hospital patients again. In September 2018, she broke into a room at Peterborough City Hospital and stole the bank card of 91-year-old Mary Banks, who was bedridden. Using Mary’s card, she spent over £10,000, hitting ATMs, McDonald’s, JD Sports, and B&Q.
Mary’s son discovered the shocking thefts after going through her late mother’s bank statements the following month. This triggered investigations that uncovered further crimes across Norwich, York, Worcester, Kent, and Sussex.
National Manhunt Ends in Caravan Park Arrest
In November 2018, Weatherman impersonated a nurse at Worcester Royal Hospital, duping two women in their 60s. One caught on and cancelled her cards, but the other fell victim to jewellery and purse theft, including £30 cash.
A nationwide hunt kicked off, and six months later police found Weatherman hiding in a caravan park at Clacton-on-Sea, Essex.
Justice Served After Relentless Investigation
Weatherman, homeless at the time, was convicted of nine counts of theft and five counts of fraud at Huntingdon Law Courts on 27 November. She was sentenced to prison once again.
“Weatherman is a relentless and heartless offender who has shown no remorse for her crimes,” said Sergeant Lewis Busby, lead investigator. “She repeatedly targeted vulnerable adults in what can only be described as the most immoral of crimes.”
Sergeant Busby praised the extensive probe involving seven police forces and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). “I hope today’s result offers some closure to the victims and their families.”
Helen Harmeston, Senior Crown Prosecutor, added: “June Weatherman ruthlessly preyed on hospital patients across the country, stealing money and bank cards for her own selfish gain. The CPS is committed to justice and provides specialist guidance for cases exploiting vulnerable victims.”
The sickening saga highlights the need for extra vigilance protecting the elderly and vulnerable in care settings.
