Drink-Driver Jailed for Killing Biker in Shocking Hit-and-Run
Mark Osborne, 48, was tragically killed when his motorcycle was struck by a van on the A60 Mansfield Road between Papplewick and Arnold. The fatal crash happened around 9pm on July 25, 2021.
Van Swerved Erratically Before Deadly Crash
Witnesses recalled the van swerving repeatedly just moments before the smash. The driver, Julieanne Walsh, 32, from Mansfield, was nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit after a heavy night at the pub.
Despite hitting Mark, Walsh sped off but was soon caught by police. Today at Nottingham Crown Court, she was sentenced to five years in prison after admitting causing death by careless driving while drunk. She’ll serve half behind bars and half on licence.
Family Heartbroken Over “Careless and Selfish Act”
“Almost a year ago, our lives were ruined by a careless and selfish act that took away a husband, a friend, a son, a brother, and a father,” said Mark’s family in a statement.
“Mark was kind, funny, and caring. He lived life to the fullest and brightened so many lives. His love for cooking, movies, and family was cruelly taken from us all. The pain is indescribable.”
“He was a generous soul who often donated toys to sick children and raised money for charities. We are utterly shattered.”
Police Track Drunk Driver Using CCTV Evidence
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit swooped on the scene and uncovered that another vehicle was involved. CCTV footage helped identify Walsh’s van, which had damage matching debris at the crash site.
Walsh admitted involvement and was arrested. Tests revealed she had drunk five pints of lager and two Jägerbombs before getting behind the wheel. CCTV also showed her struggling to walk into her van 40 minutes before the tragedy.
Witnesses described dangerous driving—including swerving onto a grass verge and tailgating—before she fatally collided with Mark’s motorcycle and then fled.
Judge Condemns “Ultimately Stupid and Selfish” Drunk Driving
Judge Gregory Dickinson QC slammed Walsh’s actions, calling the crash a “ultimately stupid and selfish act” that shattered many lives.
“On July 25, 2021, you drove drunk and killed a lovely human being. While you never intended harm, your actions were as devastating as using a weapon. A drunk driver’s vehicle is a lethal weapon.”
“No sentence can replace a lost life. Every life is unique, and nothing the court can do will make this right.”
Walsh’s guilty plea, remorse, and clean record were taken into account during sentencing.
Police Warn on Danger of Drunk Driving
Police Sergeant Mark Baker said: “The impact of Walsh’s careless and drunk driving will be felt by Mark’s loved ones forever. This collision was preventable if Walsh had respected the law and others on the road.”
“This tragedy is a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of drink-driving. We hope it sends a clear warning: breaking the law and risking lives will lead to prosecution.”
