Knife Attack on Sunderland Street: Lucky Escape for Victim
Ibrahim Abdilahi faces years behind bars after stabbing a man in broad daylight on Sunderland’s Hutton Street. The shocking attack happened on the evening of November 1 last year following an argument.
Carotid Artery Severed in Brutal Assault
Tempers flared before Abdilahi, 28, pulled out a knife and plunged it into the victim’s neck. The blade severed a carotid artery, bringing the man inches from death. Neighbours watched in horror as the attack unfolded outside their windows.
The victim was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery and placed in a coma.
Bloodied Suspect Caught Trying to Hide
After the attack, Abdilahi was spotted entering a nearby property, covered in blood with a cut hand. When questioned, he claimed the injury came from opening a can of tuna with a knife.
Yesterday at Newcastle Crown Court, Abdilahi was cleared of attempted murder but found guilty of wounding with intent and possessing a bladed weapon. He is due to be sentenced later this year.
Police Praise Witnesses and Warn Against Knife Crime
“It is sheer luck the victim survived,” said Detective Constable Shaun Stokoe. “The knife severed a major artery, and a millimetre either way could have meant murder or manslaughter charges.”
“There is no excuse for carrying a knife. Abdilahi has proven he’s a danger to society and faces significant jail time.”
“We will not tolerate violent knife crime on our streets. Anyone carrying a weapon will be dealt with swiftly and robustly.”
Detective Stokoe also thanked witnesses: “Their quick action in reporting the suspect was crucial. It helped officers arrest Abdilahi and get the victim urgent medical care.”
