Four Men Jailed Over Brutal New Year’s Day Caravan Attack
In the early hours of January 1, 2020, four men unleashed a savage knife and machete attack at a caravan site on Gypsy Lane, Irchester. The violent assault erupted after one of their victims tried to stop a fight during New Year’s celebrations. The attackers stormed two caravans, armed with knives, machetes, and billhooks, leaving their victims seriously injured.
Patrick McDonagh Slams 22 Years for Attempted Murder
After a lengthy probe by Northamptonshire Police, the gang faced trial in March this year. Patrick McDonagh, 37, was convicted of attempted murder, two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent, plus possession of an offensive weapon. At Northampton Crown Court on May 18, Judge Mayo handed down a heavy 22-year prison sentence to Patrick of Crabb Street, Rushden.
Three Brothers Also Locked Up for Violent Attack
- John McDonagh, 38, of Whitegate Stables, Leicestershire – jailed for 13 years and 6 months
- Bernard McDonagh, 20, also Whitegate Stables – sentenced to 8 years
- Charlie McDonagh, 21, of Bescot Croft, Birmingham – jailed for 9 years
All three were convicted of multiple counts of grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of offensive weapons. The court found their actions cruel and totally disproportionate to an earlier confrontation in Wellingborough.
Police Praise Victims’ Bravery and Meticulous Investigation
“This violent and terrifying ordeal has left the victims seriously injured and their lives changed forever,” said Detective Sergeant Ryan Catling. “It’s incredible no-one was killed in such a brutal, blood-soaked attack.”
“The victims showed immense courage facing not only physical and mental trauma but also threats and intimidation for speaking out,” he added.
“Our investigation team’s dedication ensured these reckless men are now behind bars where they belong. Violence has no place here – commit crime and we will hunt you down and bring you to justice.”
Detective Superintendent Paul Rymarz praised the police team’s “exceptional” work. “This case sends a strong warning to anyone thinking of violent crime in Northamptonshire – we have brilliant detectives ready to get you off our streets.”
