Van Driver Sentenced After Horrific Crash Leaves Biker Seriously Injured
Adam Harbatowski, 61, with no fixed address, has been slapped with a four-year driving ban and must pass an extended driving test after a shocking crash at Guildford Crown Court.
Wild Van Ride Ends in Devastating Collision
The court heard how Harbatowski’s van smashed into a motorbike on Petworth Road on the evening of 16 November 2020. The biker suffered multiple fractures to his leg and facial bones in the smash, which happened around 7pm after reports that the rider had been thrown into a ditch.
Witnesses Describe Terrifying Moments Before Crash
- Van spotted weaving dangerously across the road
- Seen driving on the wrong side for nearly a mile

Detective Constable Phil Haffenden of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:
“Harbatowski was seen driving dangerously prior to the collision, on the wrong side of the road for just under a mile. This resulted in the motorcyclist being left with serious life-changing injuries. This tragic incident has had a huge and detrimental impact on the lives of both him and his family.”
DC Haffenden also praised brave bystanders who stopped to give first aid and helped with crucial witness statements, which led to Harbatowski’s guilty plea.
