Footie Fan Jailed for Brutal Post-Match Attack at Cockton Hill
Ashly Murphy Gets Two Years for Savage Assault
Ashly Murphy, 29, from Bishop Auckland, has been locked up for two years after a violent attack at Cockton Hill recreational ground last September. The ugly incident happened right after a local football clash between Crook FC and Bishop Bay Horse.
Unprovoked Throat Grab and Punch Leaves Victim Needing Surgery
As the game ended, Murphy shockingly lunged at the victim, grabbing him by the throat and punching him hard in the jaw. The victim was rushed to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and had to undergo surgery for a broken jaw.
Justice Served at Durham Crown Court
Murphy faced Durham Crown Court earlier this month, where he was found guilty of assault. Along with his two-year prison sentence, he was slapped with a victim surcharge.
DS Sarah Hindmarsh, from the Bishop Auckland Crime Team, slammed the attack as “unprovoked and completely unsportsmanlike.”
“The final whistle had blown and the victim went to shake hands with Murphy who, instead of moving on, struck the victim’s jaw,” she said. “I’m glad the sentence reflects the seriousness of the assault and the hard work my team put into this investigation.”
