Brutal Rape Attacker Locked Up for 12 Years
Danut Bulboana, 21, with no fixed address, was sentenced to 12 years behind bars at Woolwich Crown Court on Tuesday, 17 November. He was found guilty of two rapes and one count of attempted choking.
Victim Targeted After Taxi Drop-Off Blunder
The chilling attack happened on 27 August 2019, just before midnight near Catford Bridge Railway Station. The victim, a woman in her late 20s, was making her way home after a night out when a taxi dropped her off in the wrong place. Lost and vulnerable, she suddenly found herself in a shadowy wooded area facing Bulboana.
Bulboana forced an object into her mouth to silence her screams while assaulting her. Miraculously, the woman escaped and dialled 999 for help.
Quick Police Response Leads to Arrest
Emergency services arrived within five minutes. The victim helped officers track down the exact crime scene and identify Bulboana. Despite his attempts to change clothes and disguise himself, she positively identified him.
Bulboana was arrested and, thanks to forensic evidence, charged on 25 October 2019.
Detective Praises Victim’s Courage
“This was a brutal and extremely sinister attack in which Bulboana preyed on the vulnerability of a lone woman at night,” said Detective Constable Dean Young, who led the investigation.
“I commend the sheer bravery displayed by the victim who quickly called police after a truly horrific ordeal. Her actions led to Bulboana’s arrest within an hour and ultimately secured justice.”
“This case shows our commitment to locking up sexual predators and protecting Londoners. Rape leaves lasting scars, but I hope this conviction aids the victim’s healing. If you’re a victim of a sexual crime, please come forward. Specialist officers are ready to support and guide you.”
