Shropshire man locked up for threats to kill and controlling abuse
Craig Birch jailed for 19 months
Craig Birch, 52, from Market Drayton, Shropshire, was sentenced to 19 months behind bars at Stafford Crown Court on Monday (13 March). He admitted two counts of threats to kill and one of controlling behaviour.
12 years of torment revealed
The court heard Birch subjected his victim to years of physical and emotional trauma during their 12-year relationship. On two chilling occasions, he threatened to kill her — once vowing to burn down the house with her inside.
Justice served and restraining order issued
Birch was arrested in November 2019 after a report to the police. He confessed to the offences at an earlier hearing and was slapped with an indefinite restraining order as part of his sentence.
Police praise bravery of victim
“I’d like to praise the victim for showing such bravery in coming forward and disclosing the abuse suffered at the hands of Birch,” said DC Jennie Holland.
“I’m pleased that we’ve been able to secure justice for her and that Birch will now serve punishment for his actions.
“This sentencing should serve as another reminder that the force is committed to supporting victims of domestic abuse and apprehending those responsible for these crimes.”
