Angry Passenger Jailed After Homophobic Abuse and Ticket Scam at Llandudno Station
Lee Paul Thomas Sentenced Over Rail Station Rant
Lee Paul Thomas, 42, from Leighton Court, Flintshire, was slapped with a 16-week prison sentence at Llandudno Magistrates’ Court on 27 September. He was found guilty of two public order offences after a series of rail disruptions and abuse.
Ticket Trickery Sparks Tensions
The saga began on 3 December 2020 at Llandudno railway station. Thomas tried to dodge paying for his ticket by barging past rail staff checking tickets. When challenged, he offered to buy one.
Thomas’s attempts to buy a ticket from Abergele were quickly shot down by staff who knew he hadn’t boarded the train there. Undeterred, he tried next to buy a ticket from Rhyl. Again, the staff spotted through the ticket barriers that he’d got on at Shotton and told him to buy the correct ticket.
Rant Turns Abusive and Homophobic
Things escalated fast. Thomas clenched his fists, gritted his teeth, and accused the staff member of “harassing” him. He paced nervously and hurled insults, calling the staffer a “lesbian” and suggesting they “needed to be with a man.”
The British Transport Police (BTP) got involved after viewing CCTV footage. On 16 January 2021, officers spotted Thomas on a train between Colwyn Bay and Rhyl and approached him.
More Outbursts Lead to Ejection
Things got worse on the train. Thomas accused officers of calling him “queer,” shouting, “Are you calling me queer?” and “Do I look like I’m gay?” Despite multiple warnings, he continued the outbursts and was eventually removed from the train at Rhyl.
Investigating Officer Jack Payton said: “This type of threatening behaviour will absolutely not be tolerated on the railway and we are grateful to the courts for the sentence imposed.
