Crack Addict Jailed for Life Over Brutal Murder of Pensioner in Accrington
Swannack Gets Minimum 30 Years for Sickening Murder
John Swannack, 59, from St Leger Court, Accrington, was sentenced at Preston Crown Court to serve at least 30 years for the savage murder of 79-year-old Bill Howard. Judge Robert Altham made it clear Swannack won’t even be eligible for parole until after three decades behind bars.
Horrific Attack Uncovered After Welfare Call
Emergency crews rushed to St James Street just before 2pm on August 28 last year responding to welfare concerns. Inside, they found Mr. Howard with multiple stab wounds and serious head injuries. The pensioner was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives revealed that Mr. Howard had suffered a sustained and brutal attack. Parts of his body were even doused with an accelerant before his fatal injuries to the head and chest ended his life.
CCTV and Bank Card Trail Led Police to Swannack
- On August 24, CCTV caught Swannack leaving Mr. Howard’s home carrying a black bin bag and a walking stick – at a time believed Mr. Howard was already dead.
- Swannack then used Bill Howard’s bank card multiple times over several days until his arrest on August 29.
- Further crimes uncovered showed Swannack also targeted other vulnerable elderly men, stealing £2,360 from one former neighbour in July and withdrawing £350 from another who had speech and mobility challenges.
Detective Condemns Swannack’s Callousness
“Swannack is a callous and manipulative individual who deliberately targeted elderly and vulnerable people so he could rip them off to fuel his expensive crack cocaine habit,” said DCI Allen Davies. “Bill Howard was a kind, quiet man living a simple life. I can’t imagine what he suffered in his final hours at the hands of Swannack.”
“The sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes and the danger he posed. Our thoughts remain with Bill’s family, especially his brother Jack.”
“Thanks to a high-quality investigation and overwhelming evidence, Swannack had no option but to admit his guilt.”
Heartbreaking Words from Victim’s Brother
Jack Howard, Bill’s brother, shared: “Bill and I grew up close. He was the kindest, gentlest man you could know. He never bothered anyone and would never hurt a fly. It’s devastating what happened to him.”
“Bill’s life was tough. He raised his son alone after his wife died young. Sadly, his son passed away too. After that, Bill lived quietly in his flat, always kind and gentle.”
“We met twice a week, fists bumped with a cheerful ‘Amigo’ before heading for a pub chat. Those good times are gone forever.”
Two Others Arrested then Released
Two other men from Accrington, aged 55 and 56, were initially arrested on suspicion of murder but later released with no further action.
