Richard Todd Sentenced to Five Years
Richard Todd, 52, of Foxberry Road SE4, was sentenced to five years in prison at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday, 19 December. He pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear, owning a prohibited weapon, and possessing ammunition without a certificate.
Bailiffs Threatened with Gun
On 16 December, two County Court bailiffs arrived at Todd’s home to carry out a property repossession. When they entered, Todd confronted them brandishing a handgun. The bailiffs fled and called the police.
Intense Police Standoff Ends in Arrest
Firearms officers responded quickly. Todd pointed the gun at them during a tense 20-minute standoff. Using skilled negotiation, officers persuaded him to drop the weapon before arresting him.
- Search of Todd’s home revealed 25 bullets, 24 shotgun shells, and a bulletproof vest.
- The gun was a revolver-style air pistol converted into a lethal firearm, loaded with six rounds of live ammo.
Police Praise Bravery and Professionalism
“No one expects to have a gun pointed at them while doing their job,” said Detective Constable Theo 1, South East Command Unit. “This must have been terrifying for the bailiffs. I also praise my colleagues in Firearms Command for their calm and professional response. The outcome could have been far worse.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Donna Smith added, “This incident shows the bravery and skill of our officers who face spontaneous gun incidents every day. Their communication saved lives, and I’m extremely proud of their work.”
