Slough Man Sets Grave on Fire, Gets Suspended Sentence
Syed-Anwar Jamil, 19, from Harris Gardens, Slough, was slapped with a 12-month prison sentence — but it’s suspended for a year. The Reading Crown Court handed down the punishment on Tuesday (1/11) after Jamil pleaded guilty to one count of arson.
Fire in Slough Cemetery Sparks Outrage
On 26 October 2021, Jamil deliberately set fire to a grave at Slough Cemetery and Crematorium, causing significant damage. Shockingly, he just stood by as members of the public rushed to put out the blaze.
A Strange Twist: Apologises to Grieving Family
In a bizarre move, shortly after the fire, Jamil approached the funeral family whose grave he destroyed. He handed them his details, offering support — an odd gesture that sparked disbelief.
Justice Served with a Mental Health Angle
- Jamil’s sentence includes a 12-month mental health treatment requirement.
- He must also complete 15 days of rehabilitation activities.
- A five-year restraining order is in place.
- Compensation to victims has been ordered.
“Jamil’s actions caused great distress to the family and local community,” Detective Constable Ashley Jones of Slough CID said. “He even watched as members of the community put out the fire. Jamil’s actions were unacceptable and he has been sentenced as a result.”
