Vicious Attack on Cop Ends in Guilty Verdict
Ireneusz Wiater, 35, with no fixed address, has been found guilty of a brutal assault on a police officer. A unanimous jury at Reading Crown Court convicted him of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. The verdict came down on Thursday (March 4).
Choking and Eye Gouge in Deadly Scuffle
Wiater pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assaulting an emergency worker, all tied to the terrifying incident on King Street, Maidenhead. At 2.24am on Sunday, September 20, 2020, Wiater attacked a police officer—putting him in a headlock and choking him while trying to gouge out his left eye.
He was charged and remanded the very next day.
Detective Warns of Risks Facing Police
“This was a serious assault on a police officer acting lawfully in their duties,” said Detective Constable Chris Jamieson from Maidenhead police station. “The choking and eye gouge left the officer with painful injuries, including temporary blindness in his left eye.”
“His biggest worry wasn’t the blindness but the fear he might never work in the job he loves again.”
“This could have ended much worse, highlighting the dangers police face daily. This significant sentence sends a clear message: attacks on officers will not be tolerated and criminals will be brought to justice.”
