Woman Jailed for Lying About Abuse and Fabricated Evidence
Eleanor Williams, 22, from Walney, has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in jail for nine counts of perverting the course of justice. Williams falsely claimed she was a victim of rape and human trafficking over a three-year period, sparking a major police investigation.
False Allegations Triggered Huge Police Probe
Williams accused multiple men of raping and trafficking her, including a dramatic claim on 19 May 2020 that she was taken in a car to a Barrow address and attacked by a group of Asian men—one armed with a knife. She posted images of her injuries on Facebook, which ignited widespread protests against the police.
However, police found no evidence to back up Williams’ stories. The alleged crime scene had been empty for two years, and local CCTV and witness statements contradicted her accounts. Instead, officers discovered her injuries were self-inflicted.
Evidence Unravels Fabrication of Claims
- Williams was reported missing on the night of 19 May and later found in a nearby field with injuries and a bank card in her rucksack bearing her name.
- Officers found a bloodied claw hammer at the scene, traced back to a purchase Williams made herself just days earlier.
- She created fake social media accounts impersonating men she accused to fabricate evidence.
- Other claims, like being trafficked to Blackpool and Amsterdam for sex work, were disproved with hotel records and witness testimony showing she was never alone and had normal tourist activities.
Convicted After Trial Concludes in January
Williams initially stuck to her false stories during police interviews, responding “no comment” 74 times when challenged. Only after the extensive inconsistencies were presented did she admit to lying.
Following a trial that wrapped up in January, Williams was convicted of eight counts of perverting the course of justice, alongside an earlier admitted count. Today, 14 March, she was sentenced to nearly nine years behind bars for causing significant harm and wasting police resources with her web of lies.
