Driver Jailed for Tragic Crash That Killed Two Hull Boys
Jack Hart, 32, from Anlaby Road, Hull, has been handed a hefty nine-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to causing the deaths of two young boys in a fatal collision. The sentencing came at Hull Crown Court following his admission on what was meant to be the first day of his trial on Monday 30 January.
Besides jail time, Hart was banned from driving for 13 years. The deadly crash happened on 19 October 2020 when Hart sped along Anlaby Road in a blue BMW at almost double the 30mph limit, darting through a busy bus lane during rush hour.
Speeding Driver Hits Two Boys on Bikes
Hart was clocked doing around 57mph, overtaking several vehicles dangerously before colliding with 10-year-old Stephen Duffield and 11-year-old Mason Deakin, who had ridden their bikes onto the road. Both boys were rushed to hospital, but Stephen died that very evening. Mason battled injuries for two weeks before he tragically passed away on 2 November.
Investigation Uncovers Reckless Driving and Callous Behaviour
“Jack Hart showed a reckless disregard for the safety of others, driving through the city centre in rush-hour traffic at grossly excessive speed, undertaking vehicles and ignoring bus lane regulations,” said Senior Lead Investigator Sergeant Rob Mazingham.
“His actions made a collision inevitable. Sadly, his impatience claimed the lives of two boys with bright futures.”
Detectives were further shocked after finding Hart removed the dashcam from his vehicle, which was never recovered. Throughout the investigation, Hart showed no remorse.
Heartbroken Families Speak Out
Stephen and Mason’s families released a joint statement, revealing their pain and cautioning parents about road safety:
“Losing our boys is something we will never fully recover from. We would not wish this heartache on anyone.”
“We hope raising awareness about road safety and dangers near traffic can prevent another family suffering like ours.”
Stephen’s parents shared a moving tribute:
“Our world stopped on 19 October 2020. Stephen was just 10, about to start secondary school. He would have been 13 this March.
“He loved Liverpool FC, riding his bike, and playtime with family. Stephen was the youngest of seven siblings, a social butterfly who brightened our lives.
“Hart’s refusal to show remorse, his manipulation through this long 27-month ordeal, and last-minute guilty plea without explanation have only deepened our pain.
“We’re relieved Hart is finally in prison, but nothing can bring back Stephen and Mason’s futures.”
“We thank Humberside Police for their dedication in seeking justice for our boys.”
