Trusted Family Friend Jailed for Raping Woman in Her Own Home
Conor Quaid, 26, betrayed a family’s trust by raping a woman in her own home, the Central Criminal Court heard. The Dingle man was a trusted family friend, but Justice Mary Rose Gearty slammed him for abusing that trust and noted he showed no remorse.
Guilty Verdict After Seven-Day Trial
Quaid, from Monaree, Dingle, Co Kerry, had denied raping the victim on 10 June 2018. He claimed any sexual contact was consensual. But after a seven-day trial, a jury found him guilty by a 10-1 majority verdict.
Judge Slams Quaid’s Lack of Remorse
Justice Gearty highlighted that Quaid knew the victim’s sleeping arrangements because of his close relationship with the family. She said he “violated the sanctity” of her home and abused the victim’s right to security.
The judge sentenced Quaid to eight years behind bars, with 18 months suspended. She said she could not reduce the sentence further due to his refusal to plead guilty or show remorse.
Suspended Sentence Conditions and Leniency
The suspension comes with strict conditions: Quaid must behave well for three years after release and stay away from the victim forever. Justice Gearty took into account his youth, clean criminal record, and his battle with and recovery from alcohol addiction.
