Fugitive Drug Lord Michael Moogan Nabbed After 9 Years on the Run
Michael Paul Moogan, 36, from Croxteth, Liverpool, has finally been caught after nearly a decade on the run. The notorious drug trafficker went into hiding in October 2013 following a police raid on a secretive Rotterdam cafe used as a hub for cartel meetings.
Secret Rotterdam Cafe Raided, Links to Massive Cocaine Operation
The Café de Ketel in Rotterdam was no ordinary business. It operated behind heavy security and only allowed known faces inside. It was the nerve centre for Moogan’s sprawling conspiracy to smuggle hundreds of kilos of cocaine into the UK every month.
Working with the Dutch National Crime Squad, the National Crime Agency (NCA) uncovered evidence tying Moogan and two other British men to the operation.
- Robert Hamilton, 71, from Hale, Greater Manchester, was caught at the scene and jailed for eight years in 2014 after pleading guilty.
- Robert Gerard, 57, from Liverpool, spent three years on the run before turning himself in. He was jailed for 14 years in 2017.
Massive Drug Empire with Global Reach
Moogan’s drug empire spanned continents, importing cocaine from Latin America into the EU. Funds of up to €500,000 were used to pay South American suppliers, with shipments routed via Belgium. His logistics network stretched across Europe from Bulgaria to Latvia, Spain, and Belgium, facilitating the flow of Class A drugs to the UK.
He reportedly concealed cocaine in meat shipments from Argentina and bribed port officials to avoid detection.
Captured in Dubai After Using Fake Identities
Moogan stayed hidden until April last year when Dubai Police arrested him. He attempted to dodge CCTV with false identities, including a German passport and fake UK driver’s licence under the name Michael Dier.
Following extradition back to the UK, Moogan told the arresting officer:
“You’re not going to have any trouble from me. I’m tired now. Get me up to Manny and get me in Cat A. I’m done now.”
Moogan appeared at Manchester Crown Court on 4 November and pleaded guilty to conspiring to import Class A drugs. Sentencing will follow at a later date.
NCA Praises International Cooperation in Major Bust
NCA Senior Investigating Officer Ben Rutter hailed the victory:
“Moogan’s long overdue conviction is the result of years of investigation by the NCA and partners across the UK, Europe, and Middle East. We’re grateful to Dubai Police for their persistence in tracking him down.”
“This case sends a clear message: no matter where fugitives hide, the NCA’s global reach ensures they cannot rest easy. Moogan’s drug shipments brought misery and harm to UK communities.”
