Thug Jailed for Brutal Shovel Attack on Cop During Burglary
Jay Baptise, 32, from Crystal Palace Park Road, was slammed with a nine-year jail sentence at Croydon Crown Court on Tuesday, 2 March. He also received three years each for two separate burglaries, all to run at the same time.
Violent Break-In Caught on Scene
On 14 September 2020, police were alerted to a break-in on Sherwood Road, West Wickham, by a vigilant member of the public. Officers PC Alex Gray and PC Matt Lockie arrived within five minutes. Baptise was spotted inside through a smashed window.
PC Gray shouted for him to “get down” and showed his baton. Ignoring this, Baptise moved deeper into the home, revealing a second burglar. Despite being outnumbered, PC Gray ordered them to stay put while calling for backup.
Shocking Shovel Attack Leaves Officer Seriously Injured
The second suspect fled by smashing a wooden door with a shovel and escaping through the gap. PC Gray entered through the broken window and faced Baptise alone.
In a savage attack, Baptise grabbed the shovel and swung it repeatedly at PC Gray’s head, causing deep lacerations and permanent scarring. Trying to flee, Baptise was grabbed and restrained by PC Gray and PC Lockie, despite the injuries.
Justice Served for Heroic Police Officers
Baptise pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and burglaries the day after the incident. Detective Inspector Mel Lillywhite praised the injured officers’ bravery. She said, “This sentence reflects the seriousness of the attack and sends a clear message that violence against officers won’t be tolerated.”
“Police officers put their lives on the line every day to protect the public and deserve recognition. We remain committed to bringing violent criminals to justice.”
