Man Arrested and Pleads Guilty to Stabbing Dad on Mobility Scooter
Lee Byer, 45, of Allenby Avenue, Southall, was swiftly arrested after a public appeal following the brutal stabbing of Thomas O’Halloran in August 2022.
On Monday, 29 April, Byer pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and possession of an offensive weapon. He is set to be sentenced on Friday, 10 May.
Gruesome Attack Caught on CCTV
The court heard that on 16 August 2022, Thomas, 47, was returning home on his mobility scooter after visiting Tesco on the A40, West London. Thomas was often seen busking nearby, playing his accordion.
At around 4pm, Thomas was attacked in an underpass near the A40 in Greenford. CCTV footage showed a man—later identified as Lee Byer—heading towards the underpass at the same time. Moments later, Byer was caught fleeing the scene holding a knife.
Despite being stabbed ten times, Thomas managed to reach Runnymede Gardens for help but tragically died at the scene. A post-mortem confirmed stab wounds to his chest and neck as the cause of death.
Forensic Breakthrough and Arrest
Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command launched a murder investigation. They quickly used CCTV images to appeal to the public, leading to several prison officers identifying Byer, who had recently been released from prison.
Forensic teams recovered a knife handle discarded by Byer down a drain. DNA from the handle matched both Thomas and Byer, sealing the case against him.
Byer was arrested at his Southall home in the early hours of 18 August. Police found burnt clothing in his garden matching what he wore during the attack.
Despite his initial claim, “I was in prison, so it is impossible,” Byer had actually been released five days before the stabbing.
Investigation Yields No Motive
Detective Chief Inspector Laura Nelson, who led the investigation, said: “First and foremost, my thoughts are with Thomas’s family who continue to feel the loss of their much-loved father and grandfather. His death was senseless.”
“We have conducted a meticulous investigation, tracking Byer from his prison release up to the attack. Our forensic evidence undeniably links Byer to the crime. We worked closely with the CPS and forensic teams to build an overwhelming case.”
No motive or prior connection between Byer and Thomas was found during the investigation.
