Life Sentence for Mohammed Nur in Brutal Brixton Attacks
Mohammed Nur, 34, of Bond Way, SW8, was handed a life sentence with a minimum of 32 years behind bars on Thursday, 23 May.
Nur had already pleaded guilty to the murder of Johanita, possession of an offensive weapon, and carrying a pointed or bladed article at the Old Bailey on 17 November 2023.
Multiple Attacks in Brixton Before Murder
Earlier, on 13 May, Nur was found guilty of three counts of unlawful wounding. These charges stemmed from a shocking spree of vicious assaults in Brixton on 29 April 2023, just two days before Johanita’s murder. In five minutes, Nur slashed three victims’ cheeks with a sharp weapon.
The attacks sparked a police investigation following reports of random knife slashings in the Acre Lane area between 11.25pm and 11.29pm.
Family’s Heartbreaking Statement
“Johanita passing, so violently, has left a big hole in our lives and a massive hole in our hearts. It wasn’t her time to go,” said Johanita’s father in an emotional court reading.
“There are parts of your heart you could never imagine could feel so much pain unless you go through the loss we have gone through. It is not possible to fully explain how much this has impacted our 123 now.”
Evidence and Police Action
Nur attacked and killed Johanita on 1 May as she walked through Stockwell Park Walk, SW9. He was arrested early on 2 May after a stop-and-search in Brixton Hill.
Police recovered the weapon used to kill Johanita, finding her blood on the blade and Nur’s DNA on the cloth used to grip it. Nur was wearing distinctive clothing matching CCTV footage from the previous assaults and the murder.
Officers sifted through hours of CCTV to track Nur’s movements before and after the violent attacks.
Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Webb, lead investigator, said: “Mohammed Nur has been jailed for four violent offences, carried out at random in terrifying circumstances. I realise nothing can alleviate the pain and suffering that Johanita’s family continue to endure, but I hope they – and the three others Nur attacked – can take some comfort from the fact he has been convicted and will spend a lengthy period in prison.”
