Tragic Speed Chase Ends in Fatal Crash: Paul Barrett Jailed for Manslaughter

High-Speed Hunt Ends in Disaster

Paul Barrett, 42, from Mere, appeared at Winchester Crown Court today after pleading guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility. The chilling incident happened on December 22, 2021, when Barrett was driving a Volkswagen Touran along B3089 Hindon Road in Dinton.

Barrett spotted biker Ryan Brindley riding alone the other way. Instead of passing by, he took a side road, turned around, and sped after Ryan, accelerating to nearly 80mph in a 30mph zone.

Dashcam Captures Deadly Moment

The terrifying dash cam footage showed Barrett closing in on Ryan’s motorbike. Barrett rammed his car into the rear of Ryan’s bike, sending it rolling and Ryan crashing hard onto the road.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but Ryan was pronounced dead on arrival. The police later arrested Barrett after a hospital evaluation.

Community and Family Left Reeling

“The killing of Ryan Brindley was completely random and unprovoked,” said Detective Chief Inspector Simon Childe. “This tragic event has shocked the local community and devastated all who knew and loved Ryan.”

“Ryan appears to have been chosen at random. We don’t believe the two men knew each other.”

Ryan’s partner paid an emotional tribute, saying: “Ryan was a beautiful human being – he will be missed by so many. He was deeply private, and I ask for respect towards his family’s privacy as they mourn this heartbreaking loss.”

She added heartfelt thanks to the police investigation team for their professionalism and support during the heartbreaking case.

Justice Served, But Heartache Remains

Detective Childe praised the investigation team for their hard work: “They worked tirelessly to bring swift justice for Ryan and his family.”

The case leaves a community shaken and grieving, spotlighting the deadly consequences of reckless driving in quiet rural roads.
