Ex-Boyfriend Jailed for Life After New Year’s Day Stabbing Murder
Michael Rolle, 34, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 20 years for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend Charlotte Huggins, 33, in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The chilling murder trial finished at the Old Bailey on 18 July, and Rolle was convicted of her murder.
Deadly Fight After Break-Up
The court heard the deadly attack happened shortly after Charlotte told Rolle she wanted to end their relationship. On 1 January just after 4am, police and paramedics rushed to a home on John Ruskin Street, SE5, after Charlotte was found with a stab wound. Despite frantic efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Calm Killer Cycles Away
Earlier that night, Charlotte had been drinking with a male friend at her flat. Rolle showed up, sparking an argument with the friend. Charlotte told her friend to leave but he soon returned for some forgotten items. As he approached, Rolle followed and Charlotte screamed she’d been stabbed. Coldly, Rolle dropped the knife on the pavement, threatened the friend, then cycled off without helping Charlotte or calling for aid.
Manhunt Ends with Arrest
Police launched a hunt and caught Rolle at a Kennington address on 3 January. The bicycle he used was found with Charlotte’s blood on it. Officers also discovered a letter in which Rolle claimed the stabbing was accidental and suggested Charlotte had fatally fallen onto the knife.
Detective Condemns Rolle’s Lies and Lack of Remorse
“Michael Rolle took no responsibility and portrayed himself as the victim,” said Detective Inspector Domenica Catino. “He professed love but callously watched Charlotte die before cycling away – showing no concern for her or her family, including her 10-year-old child who now faces life without a mother.”
Detective Catino added Rolle concocted an “unbelievable fantasy” that Charlotte stabbed herself, writing notes and even attempting to turn it into a suicide note to cover his tracks. His jealous rage and lack of remorse were clear throughout.
“Thanks to Charlotte’s family for their support and to the homicide team and prosecution for their tireless work. Together, we’ve secured justice for Charlotte,” she concluded.
