Dangerous Driver Claims to Be Undercover Cop, Wields Knife and Handcuffs
David Saunders shocked onlookers after crashing his car in Ashford by insisting he was an undercover police officer. The 37-year-old then whipped out handcuffs and a knife, terrifying the public who had rushed to help.
Chaos on Beaver Road
On 20 November 2021, Saunders’ Vauxhall Astra smashed into a traffic island on Beaver Road, forcing pedestrians to leap out of the way. His vehicle then mounted the pavement and crashed into a fence. When bystanders approached, Saunders tried to restart the car but failed.
He told the crowd he was an undercover cop and attempted to snatch a phone from a witness calling emergency services. Unable to show any police ID, Saunders instead brandished handcuffs and a knife, waving them wildly.
Foot Chase Ends in Arrest
Kent Police and British Transport Police arrived promptly. Saunders fled on foot but was caught near Ashford International railway station.
He later refused to provide breath or urine samples, blocking tests for alcohol or drugs.
Sentenced and Banned from Driving
At Canterbury Crown Court on 13 January 2022, Saunders admitted threatening with a bladed article, impersonating a police officer, dangerous driving, and failing to provide specimens. He was sentenced and banned from driving for over four years.
Detective Sergeant Robert Goodban said: “It is very fortunate that Saunders’ dangerous driving did not cause a far worse collision. His post-crash antics were distressing and impersonating a police officer is a serious offence. I’m pleased officers swiftly arrested him and justice has been served.”
