High-Speed Chase Ends in Crash with Horse Box
A man led police on a dangerous high-speed chase through Calne before crashing into a horse box. Julian Drew, 31, from Melksham, has been handed a two-year community order and a two-year driving ban.
Drew’s Crime Spree: No Licence, No Insurance, Crack Cocaine
Last month, Drew pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, and possession of crack cocaine. On July 31, 2020, police spotted Drew driving a blue Vauxhall Zafira believed to be uninsured. The pursuit quickly turned chaotic as Drew sped through traffic, overtaking dangerously and ignoring police orders to stop.
Reckless Escape Ends with Foot Chase and Arrest
The chase reached 70mph in a 30mph zone on the A4 London Road, where Drew smashed into a road closed sign. The drama peaked when he mounted the pavement to squeeze past a stationary horse box, wedging his car between the box and a brick wall. Attempting to flee, he tried to escape through the driver’s window but was caught after a foot chase.
Under the Influence and Armed with Crack
Tests showed Drew was under the influence of cannabis and cocaine. A search revealed crack cocaine in his possession. PC Luke Hobbs of the Roads Policing Unit slammed Drew’s reckless driving: “Despite holding no licence or insurance, Drew showed no care for road safety. It’s only luck no one was hurt.”
The horse inside the horse box was thankfully uninjured but left distressed by the crash. Police urge anyone witnessing drink or drug driving to call Wiltshire Police on 101 and promise zero tolerance for offenders.
