Derby Man Jailed for Brutal Rape of Homeless Woman
Matthew Hemmings, 41, duped a vulnerable homeless woman from Derby with promises of warmth on November 24 last year. He filmed her in a shop doorway before luring her into his flat, where he had laid out sex toys and costumes bought online.
Horrific Attack Lasted Three Hours
After encouraging the woman to smoke drugs, Hemmings handcuffed her and subjected her to a brutal three-hour rape. His victim, granted lifetime anonymity, was later found wandering the streets in tears.
Confession Leads to Lengthy Jail Sentence
Hemmings, who had no previous convictions, was arrested and found with video evidence of the attack at his Carrington Street flat. He first claimed the victim was willing but eventually pleaded guilty to rape and sexual assault.
On Wednesday, March 10, Derby Crown Court sentenced Hemmings to 13-and-a-half years in prison, plus seven years extended licence. He’ll also stay on the sex offenders register for life.
Investigator Praises Victim’s Bravery
“I would first like to commend the actions and bravery of the victim in coming forward and reporting such a harrowing and disturbing incident,” said DC Louise Munday, who led the investigation. “From the first report to finally seeing Hemmings jailed she has conducted herself with a great deal of strength and dignity.”
“Crimes like this are thankfully rare in Derby. The sentence means a dangerous individual is now off the streets for a long time. I hope this brings the victim some closure and ends this awful chapter in her life.”
