Hit-and-Run Driver Jailed for 10 Years After Horrific Hackney Crash
Speeding BMW Smashes into Taxi, Leaves Victims Critically Injured
Shofiqul Hussain, 33, of Crescent Road, E13, has been slammed with a decade behind bars for a brutal hit-and-run in Hackney. On 30 June 2019, Hussain raced a rental BMW through red lights on Wick Lane before smashing head-on into a private hire cab.
The crash left the cab driver and three passengers fighting for their lives. Horrifically, Hussain jumped out and fled the scene, abandoning his badly injured victims. One victim still battles life-changing injuries today.
Manhunt and Major Drugs Haul Lead to Arrest
Police launched a desperate search after Hussain disappeared, scouring CCTV and forensic evidence. A public appeal failed to bring him in. Finally, on 23 October 2019, officers caught Hussain leaving a property in Loughton, Essex.
The raid uncovered a stash of drugs worth over £200,000 — including cocaine, heroin, MDMA, and cannabis. Hussain was arrested on the spot.
Detective Cheers ‘Sheer Luck’ No One Died
“Hussain fled leaving critically injured victims in his wake, avoiding arrest and continuing to supply illegal drugs,” said Detective Inspector José-Paulo Qureshi.
“It was sheer luck this collision didn’t result in a fatality. I’m pleased with the sentence and that a dangerous driver and drug supplier has been removed from our roads and communities.”
