Victim of Modern Slavery Forced to Live on Sofa with Meagre Pay

A vulnerable Romanian man was trapped in a modern slavery nightmare in Nottinghamshire, forced to live on a cramped sofa with barely enough food. Despite grueling shifts at two local factories, he was paid a tiny fraction of his wages by 35-year-old Elvis Scripcaru, who controlled the victim’s money and credit card.

Exploited for Months and Cheated Out of Thousands

The 29-year-old victim worked three months picking vegetables and packing chocolates, with his wages funneled straight into Scripcaru’s bank account. Told that low pay was due to taxes, he only received £30 a week to live on. Everything from transport fees, rent, to cigarettes and food was deducted from his earnings. Scripcaru used the stolen cash to fund his family’s lifestyle.

Promised a Better Life, Delivered Hell

The man was trafficked from Romania to the Republic of Ireland, then to the UK by ferry. Scripcaru promised him shorter hours and double pay. Instead, he was forced to work long late shifts, sleep on a sofa in Radford, and survive on scraps.

Police Crack Down on Slave Driver

The victim finally reported Scripcaru after he couldn’t afford to eat. Nottinghamshire Police launched a complex investigation, tracking bank accounts and phone records. Scripcaru, from New Basford, was convicted of trafficking, forcing labour, and handling criminal property. He was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison and handed a ten-year Slavery and Trafficking Prevention Order.

“He was targeted with promises of a better life but forced to work long hours for no money,” said Detective Constable Matthew Wakeling. “He is still being supported by specialist officers.”

Detective Inspector Paul Lefford added, “This sentence sends a clear message: exploit others and you will be caught. We thank the victim for his courage throughout this trial.”

Nottinghamshire Police urge anyone worried about exploitation to contact them or the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700.
