Stepfather Jailed for Horrific Abuse Over Four Years
A 58-year-old man was found guilty of multiple sexual offences against his stepdaughter, including four counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault. To protect the victim’s identity, details remain limited.
Groomed as a Toddler, Abused for Years
The nightmare began when the defendant started dating the girl’s mother when the child was just two years old. He quickly groomed the toddler before abusing and raping her repeatedly over four long years.
“I couldn’t remember a time when he didn’t sexually assault me,” the victim told the court.
Mother’s Suspicion Ignored, Abuse Exposed Through School Friend
When the girl was ten, her mother found a troubling diary entry alleging molestation by the stepfather. Despite confronting him, he convinced her it was fiction. The mother then questioned her daughter, who remained silent and refused to involve the police.
The abuse only came to light when the victim confided in a school friend, who alerted a teacher. The man was subsequently arrested, according to Prosecutor Silcott.
Denial, Lies, But No Remorse
At Croydon Crown Court, the defendant tried to smear the victim, portraying a child’s normal feelings as a “plan to ruin his life.” He denied all charges and lied to the jury during his second trial.
“He had no remorse for his actions,” said Prosecutor Silcott.
The victim revealed the devastating long-term effects:
“I did not have a happy childhood. I was depressed and had to hide everything because of him. I suffer panic attacks and have even considered suicide.”
The girl’s relationship with her mother remains strained. Her mother said:
“I now realise I had been living with a monster for eight years.”
No Previous Convictions, But Sentenced to 18 Years
The man had no prior convictions and once coached youngsters in sports. Judge Anthony Roger Abell condemned the defendant’s gradual grooming as “unnatural, sinister, and just plain wrong.”
The judge handed down an 18-year prison sentence with an additional year suspended. He must also sign the sex offenders register and comply with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
