Mum Found Guilty After Baby Dies in Horror Squalor
Fartun Jamal, 25, from NW10, was convicted on Friday, 4 March, of causing the death of her 11-month-old daughter Nafahat Diini, plus three counts of child cruelty, at Harrow Crown Court.
Tragic Death in Filthy Flat
Detective Chief Inspector Madeline Ryder described the case as “absolutely tragic” and “needless.” Baby Nafahat died of a treatable respiratory infection while living in horrifying conditions. The baby’s cot was soaked in urine, with human faeces smeared on the walls of her room. The flat reeked of urine, stacked with dirty nappies and rotting food.
Worse still, Nafahat’s GP surgery was less than 70 metres away – visible from her bedroom window – yet Jamal failed to seek help.
Harrow Horror Scene Detailed in Court
- Police and paramedics arrived after Jamal called the ambulance service claiming her baby wasn’t breathing.
- Despite first aid, Nafahat was pronounced dead at the scene on 13 March 2019.
- A post-mortem confirmed death by bronchitis complicated by pneumonia.
- The baby’s broken travel cot was unfit for her age and covered in urine-soaked bedding.
- Jamal’s bedroom had mouse droppings and faeces on the walls.
- The kitchen fridge held only two nearly empty milk bottles; the freezer had melted ice cream.
- Congealed pasta was found on the windowsill used bizarrely as an ashtray.
- No toys or photos of the baby were in the home.
Police and Investigators Speak Out
“No child should ever have to suffer in this manner,” said DCI Ryder. “Our team worked tirelessly to secure this conviction. This heartbreaking case has touched us all.”
Jamal, arrested on suspicion of neglect, refused to answer questions. After months of investigation, she was charged in December 2020 and found guilty.
Sentencing will be scheduled soon at Harrow Crown Court.
