Life for Navy Man Rapist After Shocking Assaults on Five Women
Tom Rodwell, 31, from Middlesbrough, was slammed with a life sentence in January after admitting to 10 rapes, one attempted rape, and a sexual assault. The former Royal Navy man and employee attacked five women multiple times between 2017 and 2020, Teesside Crown Court heard.
Harsh Sentence Stands Despite Leniency Appeal
Rodwell’s punishment sparked calls for review under the Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme. But the Attorney General’s office refused to take it further, saying the sentence wasn’t “unduly lenient.” A spokesperson explained:
“A referral to the Court of Appeal only happens if the sentence is unduly lenient, or if the judge made an error or imposed a sentence outside the reasonable range. The threshold is high and was not met here.”
‘Callous Predator’ Who Showed No Remorse
Judge Paul Watson branded Rodwell a “callous, unfeeling sexual predator” and warned he posed a “significant danger” to the public. Victims, some university students, suffered not just physical abuse but emotional torment, often manipulated into blaming themselves.
The court heard Rodwell showed chilling disregard for consent. He told one victim he wanted to “own her” and “choke her,” revealing a twisted mindset.
Past Acquittal Failed to Halt His Crimes
Shockingly, Rodwell faced similar rape charges in Scotland back in 2018 but was acquitted. Despite that, his dark behaviour continued until his recent conviction.
