Sophie Lancaster’s Killer Ryan Herbert Set for Early Release
Ryan Herbert, who brutally murdered Sophie Lancaster in a Lancashire park in 2007, is now set to walk free. The Parole Board has decided he can be released on licence, sparking fury from Sophie’s mother, Sylvia Lancaster.
Sophie’s Family Outraged by Parole Decision
Sylvia slammed the move as a “justice system that fails to deliver justice.” She reminded the public why Herbert’s life sentence was harsh – because Sophie suffered a “feral” and savage attack that left her with injuries so severe “paramedics could not tell if she was male or female.”
“Once again we have a justice system that fails to deliver justice,” said Sylvia.
Attack Details and Sentence Cut Sparks Controversy
- Herbert, aged 16 at the time, and accomplice Brendan Harris viciously beat Sophie in Bacup’s Stubbylee Park as she shielded her boyfriend Robert Maltby.
- Sophie died 13 days later from the savage injuries inflicted by the attackers.
- Herbert admitted murder and grievous bodily harm, initially given a minimum term of 16 years and 3 months, later reduced to 14½ years.
- A High Court judge cut Herbert’s tariff in 2020 after citing his “exceptional progress” in prison.
Despite this progress, Sylvia condemned the parole board for ignoring the “reality of the level of violence” Sophie endured.
Parole Board Cites Rehabilitation and Remorse
The parole panel praised Herbert’s transformation. They noted he:
- Improved behaviour after moving to an adult prison.
- Engaged fully in rehabilitation and resettlement programs.
- Studied to degree level in an open prison.
- Built positive relationships with staff and showed genuine remorse.
- Faced no compliance issues during temporary releases.
The board concluded Herbert was now “suitable for release” but will be subject to strict restrictions on his movements and contacts.
Co-Attacker Brendan Harris Still Behind Bars
Brendan Harris, also found guilty of Sophie’s murder and attacking Robert Maltby, remains imprisoned. He received a life sentence with a minimum term of 18 years.
This case continues to divide public opinion as the killer’s release nears, reopening raw wounds for Sophie’s family and supporters.
