Graffiti Vandals Busted in Canterbury Underpass Raid
Kent Police sprang into action in the early hours of Wednesday, 1 December 2021, after CCTV spotted a gang defacing an underpass on St George’s Street at around 3am.
Two Men Arrested for Criminal Damage and Drug Possession
Officers arrested two men in their twenties on suspicion of causing criminal damage. A 22-year-old from Canterbury also faces drug charges after cocaine was found in his possession. Both suspects have since been bailed as investigations continue.
Authorities Crack Down on Costly Graffiti Blight
“Graffiti blights communities. It not only increases the fear of crime but costs councils and property owners a great deal of money to remove,” said Inspector Guy Thompson. “We will not hesitate in taking action against those who damage property in our neighbourhood.”
Lead councillor Ashley Clark praised the quick response: “Our CCTV team’s sharp eyes at 2.50am helped police make two arrests fast. This shows how well our organisations work together with immediate, positive results.”
He added: “Our graffiti cleaning team was out later the same day, spending taxpayers’ money to erase the mess. It’s frustrating that scarce resources are wasted on removing such mindless criminal scrawl instead of improving life for residents.”
“This case underlines just how valuable CCTV is in fighting and preventing crime.”
