Terrifying Home Invasion Ends With Crook Behind Bars
On 24 July 2021, Harry Garratty crashed into a Carlton Avenue home and launched a messy search for valuables. The homeowner came back to find him descending the stairs with a crowbar in hand.
Victim Threatened, Forced to Hand Over Valuables
Garratty threatened the woman, forcing her to hand over her handbag and car keys. Before leaving, he warned her not to phone the police. But the horror didn’t stop there.
The victim chased after him, begging him not to steal her car as she needed to pick up her child. Ignoring her pleas, Garratty nabbed cash from her purse, hopped out of her car, and sped off in another vehicle parked nearby.
Police Crackdown Leads to Arrest
Quick police work identified Garratty’s car, registered in his name, and his fingerprint at the scene sealed his fate. He was caught on 27 July.
The 35-year-old from Shepperton Close, Chatham, was charged with robbery, car theft, and stealing cash. Garratty later admitted guilt at Maidstone Crown Court.
Six Years Inside for Dangerous Offender
On Wednesday 16 November 2022, Garratty was slammed with a six-year prison sentence plus two and a half years on extended licence.
PC Ben Slocombe of the Chief Constable’s Crime Squad said: “Breaking into somebody’s home is an appalling offence and this criminal put a woman through a terrifying ordeal. The fact that he ransacked a number of rooms and then made violent threats mean a prison sentence is entirely appropriate. I would like to commend the victim who has shown considerable courage in assisting us to bring the dangerous offender to justice.”
