Predator Caught After Bizarre Online Sting
Mohammed Nayum was sentenced to 10 years behind bars at Birmingham Crown Court on 19 December. The 31-year-old from Small Heath, Birmingham, was snared thanks to a slick operation by the West Midlands Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU).
Horrific Exploits Revealed
Back in autumn 2018, Nayum preyed on a vulnerable boy, trading drugs for sexual acts. Police launched a covert operation after suspicions grew, with Nayum caught in sickening online chats. He believed he was grooming a 12-year-old boy, but officers secretly gathered damning evidence.
Justice Served After Painful Wait
The Covid pandemic caused delays, pushing Nayum’s trial to June 2022. He faced nine charges including sexual activity with a child, paying for child sex, drug possession, and possession of indecent images. The jury found him guilty on six counts.
West Midlands Police fought hard to keep Nayum behind bars while awaiting trial, prioritising public safety.
Lifetime Sentence & More
- Nayum will serve 10 years in prison.
- He must sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.
- A sexual harm prevention order was imposed.
Detective Constable Mike Woodburn praised the victims and witnesses, saying: “Good results like this are the result of a huge amount of hard work and this case shows the commitment of officers in the Public Protection Unit to get justice for victims.”
Detective Inspector Stephen Wills added: “Our number one purpose is to safeguard children in the West Midlands. Offenders targeting children should know there is no safe space online where we cannot reach them.”
