Gun Possession Lands Sheffield Man Behind Bars for Six Years
Junaid Maroof, 26, of Edgedale Road, was jailed for six years and three months at Sheffield Crown Court last Friday (19 March). The charge? Possession of an illegal firearm.
Panicked Dash Caught on Armed Officers’ Watch
On the evening of 5 August 2020, at around 8:45pm, Armed Response Officers spotted Maroof stepping out of a car on Lumley Street. Spotting the cops, he bolted in a panic towards some nearby bushes about 20 metres away. The officers saw him clutching something that looked like a handgun. A quick search found a black-handled gun and six rounds of ammunition stashed in the bushes.
Swift Arrest and Strong Words From Police
Maroof was arrested on the spot and taken to Shepcote Custody. Superintendent Ian Profitt of the Armed Crime Unit said the police are determined to crack down on gun crime.
“We are committed and continuing to work hard to disrupt organised criminality across Sheffield,” said Profitt.
“Maroof’s sentence comes from co-ordinated efforts linking shootings across the city. We want to send a message that the police, prosecutors and courts are united in delivering tough sentences.”
“Our Armed Response officers’ pro-active patrols help protect communities and disrupt criminals. But we need the public’s help. Intelligence from the public is key to our success. Please keep calling 101 or Crimestoppers to report information.”
Additional Charges and Sentences
Maroof’s jail time also includes charges of affray from 2018. His co-defendants, Qamar Nain and Sarfraz Razaq, each received 14-month sentences.
