A rapid multi-agency search and rescue operation brought 39 people safely ashore. Sadly, four others were pronounced dead at the scene.
Man Arrested and Charged
Detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, backed by the National Crime Agency, launched an investigation into the deaths. On Friday, 16 December, a 19-year-old man, Ibrahima Bah, of no fixed address, was arrested.
The Crown Prosecution Service has now authorised charges against Bah for knowingly facilitating the attempted illegal entry into the UK of people he knew—or had good reason to believe—were asylum seekers.
Bah was remanded in custody and is set to appear at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 19 December.
Ongoing Investigation and Appeals
Officers continue working to confirm the identities of the deceased and contact their next of kin. Authorities urge anyone with information that could help the investigation to come forward.
