Knife-Wielding Thieves Jailed After Two Terrifying Broadstairs Robberies
Zyon Elsom and Kane Sampson have admitted to two counts of robbery, possession of an offensive weapon, and possession of a knife. Neil Clarke, meanwhile, was found guilty of the same offences by a jury at Canterbury Crown Court.
Violent Robberies Just Days Apart
The crime spree hit Broadstairs in March 2021. The first robbery took place at a Premier Store on Queens Road on the evening of Tuesday, 9 March. Around 7.30pm, a shop worker was threatened with a knife and assaulted. The gang demanded cash from the till and stuffed a bag with alcohol, tobacco, and money before fleeing.
Just three days later, on Friday 12 March at 3pm, a post office on Joy Lane was targeted. This time the robbers used a hammer to threaten a female staff member. The weapon was slammed onto her hand to pin her down while the crooks grabbed cigarettes and tobacco. They also snatched her mobile phone just before the emergency alarm went off and made their escape.
Police Hunt Ends With Dramatic Foot Chase

After reviewing CCTV and receiving witness descriptions, patrols spotted the trio near the A299 in Ramsgate. The suspects tried to flee in their car but were chased on foot and caught in a nearby field.
Officers recovered the hammer and the clothes worn during the robberies from the vehicle and a nearby property. All three were arrested and charged.
Jail Sentences Sent Message to Local Community
- Neil Clarke, 38, of Paragon, Ramsgate, jailed for 10 years
- Zyon Elsom, 20, no fixed address, sentenced to 3 years
- Kane Sampson, 21, no fixed address, also 3 years
Detective Sergeant Jay Robinson said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for victims just doing their jobs. These men are a danger to society and showed no regard for human life.”
“We’re pleased the court has handed prison sentences and hope the community can rest easier knowing these violent criminals are behind bars.”
