Predator Busted After Victim’s Quick Thinking Saves Her
Andrew Mills, 61, tricked a distressed woman into accepting a lift, only to subject her to a horrific ordeal in his van. Instead of taking her home, Mills turned predator — but thanks to the victim’s quick wit, he was caught and brought to justice.
From Good Samaritan to Violent Offender
It all began just after midnight on 6 August 2019 in gravesend/" title="Gravesend" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Gravesend town centre. The victim was upset after her phone was stolen. A group of strangers tried to help, and Mills offered her a ride home in his van. She accepted — a decision that nearly cost her dearly.
During the drive, Mills committed multiple sexual offences. The victim managed to escape, using her concealer to jot down the van’s number plate. She alerted police, who quickly tracked down and arrested Mills near his home on Granville Road.
Guilty on All Counts at Woolwich Crown Court
Mills denied two rapes and three other sexual offences. But after a trial at Woolwich Crown Court, the jury found him guilty on every charge. He was sentenced on 14 July 2021.
Police Praise Victim’s Bravery
“Mills is an opportunistic predator who poses an extreme danger to women,” said Detective Inspector Ross Gurden.
“He exploited a clearly vulnerable woman in the most deceitful way imaginable. But despite her trauma, the victim showed exceptional courage. Using her concealer to write down his registration was brilliant presence of mind.”
“While nothing can undo the harm done, I hope this justice brings her some comfort.”
