Massive Police Clampdown on Violent Crime in Ilford and Barking
Over two days in early February, Met Police launched a fierce crackdown on high-harm offenders across Ilford, Barking, and surrounding areas. Weapon sweeps and community patrols targeted violent crime hotspots with a massive multi-agency operation.
Joint Forces Sweep Streets for Weapons and Drugs
The Violence Suppression Units (VSUs), backed by elite teams like the Firearms Command’s Trojan Unit, Mounted Branch, Dog Section, and British Transport Police, hit areas including Ilford Lane and Valentine’s Park. The Multi-Agency Tasking Team worked with Redbridge Council officers to tackle local issues head-on.
Set up in May 2020, the VSUs focus on smashing street violence using proactive tactics across London’s borough commands.
Operation Nets 13 Arrests and Major Seizures
- 13 arrests for serious offences including drug supply, possession of offensive weapons, and grievous bodily harm
- Seven weapons confiscated after 10 weapon sweeps
- Huge haul of drugs, over £5,000 in cash, and seven cars seized
- 50 people slapped with fines for breaking coronavirus rules
Friday saw officers stop a suspicious car in Barking. A knife was found on the driver, along with fake documents. He was arrested and charged. Later, another vehicle flagged on ANPR as stolen was pulled over. The driver was wanted for multiple serious crimes including burglary, dangerous driving, and drug offences.
Sergeant Praises Team Effort and Calls for Public Help
“This two-day operation has been a real team effort across the Met and produced great results, working together to bear down on violence,” said Sergeant Nick Hancock of East Area VSU. “Thanks to all involved, including British Transport Police.
“ANPR cameras helped us spot vehicles involved in crime, stopping offenders before they could cause harm. Areas plagued by violence and robbery sorely affect residents. We’re working daily to make London safer, and these surges help speed that up. Our work continues throughout 2021.”
“We need the public’s help. If you know something, no matter how small, contact us or Crimestoppers. It’s 100% anonymous.”
