Woman Jailed for Faking Rape and Trafficking Claims
Eleanor Williams, 22, from Walney, has been found guilty of perverting the course of justice after falsely accusing multiple men of rape and trafficking over three years. The shocking verdict came at Preston Crown Court on 3 January 2023.
False Allegations Sparked Major Police Probe
Williams admitted nine counts of perverting justice. Her lies triggered a massive police investigation targeting human trafficking and child sex abuse. Several men were arrested, including one who spent over two months in custody awaiting trial.
Police Slam ‘Baseless’ Claims That Heightened Community Tensions
“Williams baselessly claimed she’d been targeted by Asian grooming gangs and accused innocent men of horrific crimes,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Iain Stalker, Cumbria Police Head of Crime.
“Her false allegations led to wrongful arrests and damaged trust in the police. She even created fake Snapchat accounts and self-inflicted injuries to back up her lies.”
Detective Stalker added this type of fabricated crime is rare but warned that genuine abuse happens in every community. He urged anyone suffering physical or sexual abuse to come forward, promising sensitive and thorough investigations by skilled officers.
Williams’ Fake Claims Undermine Real Victims’ Courage
“I want to thank those who bravely gave evidence, especially Williams’ victims,” said Detective Stalker. “False allegations like these risk diverting resources and harming trust, but we remain committed to bringing real abusers to justice.”
