Woman Jailed for Spitting at Emergency Worker Amid Covid Chaos
Spitting Attack Lands Her Behind Bars
A Scarborough woman has been locked up for 26 weeks after spitting at an emergency services worker during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic. Stonehouse, from Barrowcliff Road, appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court where she pleaded guilty to assaulting the worker. She was also slapped with a £100 compensation order.
Horrific Assault Sparks Outrage
Detective Sergeant Jane Brewster slammed the “vile behaviour,” calling it “particularly deplorable” given the Covid-19 risks. She said:
“Any assault on emergency services workers is unacceptable, but this kind of vile behaviour amid the current risk of Covid-19, is particularly deplorable and distressing for the victim. Throughout these difficult times, police officers and police staff continue to put their service to the public first, to keep people and communities safe across North Yorkshire. Nobody should be assaulted for doing their job and I hope the custodial sentence given to Stonehouse shows how completely unacceptable this is.”
Zero Tolerance for Covid-Related Attacks
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has warned that anyone deliberately coughing or spitting at emergency workers, or using Covid-19 threats, will face serious criminal charges. The message is clear: these attacks will not be tolerated.
