Carer Jailed Over Starvation Death of Young Woman
Elaine Clarke, 49, has been sentenced to nine years and seven months for the gross negligence manslaughter of Debbie Leitch, 24. Clarke initially denied the charges but changed her plea just days before her trial at Preston Crown Court.
Tragic Discovery in Blackpool Home
Emergency services found Debbie’s emaciated body in her Blackpool home in August 2019. The young woman, who suffered from 1 syndrome, was left to die in a squalid room. The scene was described as “truly shocking.” A post-mortem revealed severe emaciation, neglect, and an extensive scabies infection.
Debbie’s weight had dropped drastically—from 10st 1lb in 2016 to just 3st 10lb at the time of her death. Clarke, a mother-of-four, was registered and paid as Debbie’s carer but failed to provide proper care.
MP Demands Tougher Sentence
Scott Benton, Conservative MP for Blackpool South, slammed the sentence as “far too lenient.” He called the abuse “awful” and expressed disgust that someone trusted to care for Debbie could let this happen.
“The sentence handed down appears to be far too lenient in this horrendous case and I sincerely hope it is increased on appeal to reflect the awful nature of this crime,” said Benton.
Attorney General Refers Case for Sentence Review
Attorney General Suella Braverman confirmed the case has been passed to the Court of Appeal. The Solicitor General reviewed the sentence “with the utmost care” and decided to seek an increase.
“It is now a matter for the court to decide whether to increase the sentence,” Braverman stated.
The case continues to draw outrage, highlighting failures in the care system and the desperate need for justice for Debbie Leitch.
