First Aid: What You Must Do

  • Ensure safety first: Don gloves or protective gear before approaching to avoid contact with the chemical.
  • Brush off powder: If the chemical is powdery, carefully brush it off the skin.
  • Douse with water: Flood the burn with clean water for at least 20 minutes to dilute and stop chemical action.
  • Remove contaminated clothes: While flushing with water, gently take off any affected clothing.
  • Eye injuries: Hold the injured eye under cold water for a minimum of 10 minutes, irrigating thoroughly inside and out.
  • Do not: Let the victim close or rub the injured eye or forcefully remove contact lenses.
  • Prevent cross-contamination: Avoid splashing contaminated water onto the unaffected eye.
  • Cover the injured eye: Use a clean, non-fluffy pad before rushing the victim to hospital.
  • Call 999 immediately: Emergency services must be on their way before or during first aid.

The number of acid attacks in London has soared from 261 cases in 2015 to 458 last year. Experts warn the brutal assaults are becoming more frequent and more dangerous.
