Man Jailed Over Toddler’s Tragic Death in Car Seat Crush

A Croydon man has been locked up for seven and a half years after a three-year-old boy was crushed to death by a car seat. Stephen Waterson, 26, admitted manslaughter by gross negligence at the Old Bailey on 14 November. The devastating death of little Alfie Lamb happened nearly six years ago, but justice has finally been served.

How Alfie Died: Car Seat Horror

On 1 February 2018, Alfie was travelling in an Audi convertible with four adults, including his mother and Waterson. The toddler was placed in the footwell between his mother’s legs, behind Waterson’s seat.

Waterson pushed his electrically-operated seat back to gain space – unknowingly trapping Alfie beneath it. The seat exerted pressure of up to 81kg, causing fatal crush asphyxia. Paramedics found burst blood vessels around Alfie’s eyes, a clear sign of suffocation. The pathologist confirmed he died from being crushed.

Cover-Ups, Lies and Shady Moves

  • Alfie’s mum and another adult told paramedics they were in a taxi when Alfie became unresponsive – a lie to cover up what really happened.
  • Waterson kept in phone contact with Alfie’s mum while the boy was in hospital, coordinating their false story.
  • After Alfie died, Waterson tried to sell the Audi for £800, but police recovered it for forensic checks.
  • Waterson also attacked the Audi’s driver a fortnight later, attempting to silence him about the incident.
  • He gave a prepared statement claiming he loved children and wouldn’t harm one deliberately.

Sentences for Crime and Cover-Up

Waterson was sentenced to five years and six months for manslaughter. He also got two years for intimidating a witness and 18 months for conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. These run concurrently but consecutively to his manslaughter term, totalling seven and a half years behind bars.

Emilie Williams, 20, who helped cover up the crime, received a suspended five-month jail term and 100 hours’ unpaid work.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Harding said: “Stephen Waterson has consistently tried to dodge responsibility for Alfie’s death and put the family through needless trauma. His guilty plea at retrial finally brings some justice.”

Alfie’s family said: “We are utterly devastated. Alfie was a happy little boy with his whole life ahead. No sentence will ever be enough, but justice has prevailed. We hope to now move forward with our memories of Alfie.”

This heartbreaking case exposes the tragic consequences of negligence and cover-ups. Waterson’s jail time is a grim reminder that no one escapes justice when a child’s life is lost.
